Both are among the best in the industry. Choosing between them is like choosing between two excellent hospitals. You'll get quality care either way, but one might fit your specific needs slightly better.
Money Management International (MMI) is the largest nonprofit credit counseling agency in the U.S. BBB A+ rated since 1994, Trustpilot 4.6 stars from 1,800+ reviews, and only 15 CFPB complaints in three years. Setup fees run $33 to $75, monthly fees $25 to $59. They offer the broadest range of services: DMPs, housing counseling, student loan counseling, bankruptcy counseling, disaster recovery counseling, and military family programs.
GreenPath Financial Wellness has been operating since 1961 and holds a BBB A+ rating since 1968. Their review profile is nearly perfect: 4.95 stars from 1,297 BBB reviews. Setup fees range from $0 to $50, monthly fees from $0 to $75. GreenPath is particularly strong in housing counseling and financial literacy education.
Fees: GreenPath's fees can start lower ($0 setup is possible) but can reach $75 monthly. MMI's range is more predictable. Both will reduce or waive fees for hardship. For most people, the fee difference is marginal over the life of a DMP.
Services: If you need housing counseling alongside debt management, GreenPath has a slight edge with their deep focus on housing. If you need student loan counseling or disaster recovery services, MMI's broader service menu is advantageous.
Customer experience: GreenPath's 4.95-star average from nearly 1,300 reviews is hard to beat. MMI has more total reviews across platforms but a slightly lower average (still excellent). One specific complaint about GreenPath worth knowing: some clients report a 2-week delay between when GreenPath receives your payment and when creditors get paid. Ask about this upfront.
My suggestion: Call both. The initial consultation is free at both agencies. Compare the specific DMP terms they offer (the concession rates from your creditors will be the same regardless of which agency you use, but the fee structure and counselor experience may differ). Go with whichever counselor gives you a better experience during that first call. You'll be working with them for 3 to 5 years, so the relationship matters.
